ITMO University’s Faculty of Physics grew out of the International Research and Educational Center for Nanophotonics and Metamaterials, which was founded in 2009. Over the course of ten years, what started as a small laboratory became a large scientific and educational department.
The faculty is working in over 20 fields of nanophotonics, quantum optics, optoelectronics, optomechanics, biophotonics, radiophysics, and new materials. Its staff includes more than 300 employees: over 80 PhD and DSc holders and around 100 PhD, Master’s, and Bachelor’s students.
The concept of new physics represents the ongoing development of the faculty that encompasses new research fields, advanced educational approaches, creative freedom, confidence in young colleagues, support of the staff’s personal growth, and a strong administrative team.
The faculty is home to four large-scale laboratories:
-
optical (near-field optical microscopy, Raman scattering, dark-field and atomic force microscopy, femtosecond lasers, 2D and 3D laser lithography, and laser parametric amplifier Light Conversion);
-
microwave (anechoic chambers, network analyzers, amplifiers, and milling machines);
-
perovskite optoelectronics (glove boxes, vacuum chambers, and opportunities for surface measurements, and device fabrication);
-
chemical (equipped with everything from simple devices such as magnetic stirrers, centrifuges, and others to analytical equipment for high sensitivity and accuracy of obtained results).
Additionally, the faculty implements two Bachelor’s and three Master’s programs.
