School of Life Sciences

Ekaterina Skorb

Considered the defining field of the 21st century, life sciences study living organisms and how they interact through the lens of biology, biochemistry, genetics, biophysics, immunology, biomechanics, microbiology, and many other fields.

Life sciences play a pivotal role in securing the fundamental needs of humanity by working towards improving the quality and duration of life; solving the pressing issues in healthcare, agriculture, food safety, and ecology; as well as discovering new energy sources.

In recent years, life sciences became one of the priority fields for the world’s science and economics. In Russia, the field has been selected as one of the eight key areas of development in science, technology, and engineering by 2030.

Over the past decades, life sciences have been rapidly growing alongside computer technologies, IT, and AI – which stimulates additional opportunities for breakthroughs.

The applied branches of life sciences are in the active growth stage, as well: these include bioengineering, bioinformatics, nutritional and applied genomics, pharmacology, biocomputing, and so on.

The growth of population and its prosperity dictates the need to increase the productivity of agriculture, plant and microorganism selection, to search for alternative sources of nutrients and methods for high-density storage, to produce biofuel, and to create new biomaterials artificial cells. However, biotechnology lies at the core of life sciences.

This relatively new yet highly promising field is now pursued at ITMO University. ITMO’s School of Life Sciences was established in August 2021 and includes the following departments:

Science and education are fundamental for a person’s continuous development and their understanding of the world. ITMO’s School of Life Sciences aims to train sought-after specialists at the forefront of science and develop the technologies of the future in partnerships with the world’s top universities, as well as international research centers and laboratories.
