The Faculty of Applied Informatics aims to train a new generation of DevOps, programming, and AI professionals. The faculty is a part of ITMO’s School of Translational Information Technologies, which forms up-to-date IT competencies and ties up with the world’s top tech companies in regards to education.

Established in 2011, the faculty, which was first known as the Faculty of Infocommunication Technologies, trained specialists in telecommunication, hardware solutions, and communication systems support. But then, due to the boom in the IT sector and emerging technology trends, it was transformed into the Faculty of Applied Informatics and began to focus on state-of-the-art operations fields that cover the entire cycle of development, employment, and maintenance of IT infrastructure, automation of processes, and security of digital services.

As to its educational activities, the faculty primarily focuses on training specialists in Ops methodologies of different levels. These include:

  • advanced Ops developers;

  • MobileDevOps, DataOps, and AIOps specialists (mid-level and higher);

  • industry-specific Ops experts;

  • customers and end users of IT solutions following an Ops approach.

Among the faculty’s partners are top IT companies (Ozon, Yandex, Avito, Obit, Selectel, VK, CROC, Cian, Usergate, and ABP2B), which not only teach students, bringing classroom learning closer to real processes, but also offer internships and individual enhanced stipends for the best ones.

At the Faculty of Applied Informatics, student life goes beyond the classroom – here, professional communities and clubs are on the boil, bringing together like-minded people, as well as soon-to-be colleagues and friends. One example being the IT infrastructure club Inview where students can boost their skills in DevOps, SRE, platform engineering, and other relevant fields within and beyond the university.

The faculty opened its own coworking space at the Birzhevaya Liniya 16 campus that offers favorable conditions to both students and staff. Here, they can conveniently work on their academic and industrial projects, as well as exchange ideas and simply rest.

Additionally, the faculty is home to the Laboratory of Intelligent Services and Applications, or LISA for short. At this laboratory, students can immerse themselves in research and professional activities, partake in ongoing projects guided by the school’s experienced PIs, or launch their own projects.

The Faculty of Applied Informatics is a community of future IT leaders where each student gains not only fundamental knowledge but also marketable work experience across in-demand technology fields.
