Biography

Vladimir Nikiforov is the Vice Rector for Research at ITMO University, a professor at the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, the editor-in-chief of Scientific and Technical Journal of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics (cited by Scopus), and the chairman of the Academic Degree Council.

Vladimir Nikiforov graduated from the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics (now ITMO University) with a degree in electrical engineering in 1986. He earned his PhD (thesis title: Adaptive control of trajectory motion of electro-mechanical systems) in 1991 and DSc (thesis title: Adaptive and robust control with compensation of external disturbances) in 2001.

Between 1986 and 2024, Prof. Nikiforov has held several positions at ITMO University: a researcher at the Department of Automatic and Remote Control (1986-1992), a lecturer at the Department of Automatic and Remote Control (1992), an associate professor (1992-2001), a professor (2001-present) at the Faculty of Control Systems and Robotics, and the Vice Rector for Research at ITMO University (2002-present).

Vladimir Nikiforov has also taken different part-time positions: in particular, he was an invited lecturer at Linkoping University (Sweden) in 1991; a senior a researcher at the Laboratory of Complex Systems at the Institute of Problems of Mechanical Engineering of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1993-1994 and 2000-2005); an associate professor at the St. Petersburg University of Printing Industry (1994-1997); a senior researcher at the federal research institute Elektropribor, St. Petersburg (1999-2004); the Vice Rector for Research at ITMO University (2002-present) and the technical director of the LOMO company (2004-2013).

From 1985 to present, Vladimir Nikiforov took part in more than 30 research projects, including:

  • computer-based control systems for ship screw-propeller motor;

  • adaptive control for trajectory motion of nonlinear systems;

  • development and computer-aided design of high-precision path following control systems;
