Program description
The program is aimed at prospective students who would like to become experts in optical and quantum technologies for data transfer, processing, and recording, as well as femtotechnology.
During their studies, students will acquire in-depth knowledge and practical skills in both core subjects, such as photonics and optoinformatics, and specialized disciplines, such as optical communication systems and quantum communications, optical systems for recording, storing, and displaying of information, and femtosecond optics and femtotechnologies.
They will also learn more about advanced high-tech areas of scientific and technical activities related to the use of information technologies based on optical and quantum principles, as well as electromagnetic radiation of the optical range for the diagnosis and therapy of socially significant diseases.
With the acquired competencies, students will be able to conduct research and engineering activities that involve the development and operation of optical and quantum devices and systems for data transfer, processing, and recording; the creation and operation of lasers and laser systems for various purposes; the development and application of holographic technologies; and the software development for photonics and optoinformatics systems. Students have the chance to gain a high level of theoretical and practical expertise by participating in the innovative projects of ITMO’s International Institute of Photonics and Optoinformatics and its laboratories.
Specializations
-
Ultrafast Optics (a double-degree specialization with TAU): the specialization focuses on a set of scientific fields, including nonlinear, ultrafast, and THz optics, which allows students to freely pursue their careers in one of the fields or at their intersection, or work in breakthrough research or emerging industry.
-
Advanced Materials (a double-degree specialization with TAU or UEF): the specialization pays particular attention to the creation, study, development, and modernization of innovative photonic materials for various areas of research. Its courses will help students obtain top-level competencies in the field of materials science.
- Quantum Optics: the focus of the specialization lies in such scientific fields as quantum information theory and quantum materials. It is devoted to the description of the information aspects of quantum systems, and its physical principles, mainly optical.
Students will learn:
- how to apply the skills and knowledge gained to their professional activity;
- how to use information, computer, and network technologies in photonics and optoinformatics;
- how to develop and operate optical devices and systems to transfer, process, and record information;
- how to develop and operate fiber-quantum communications and networks;
- how to analyze the optical properties of optoinformatics systems and use nonlinear optics methods to describe phenomena and photonics devices;
- how to apply knowledge of the processes occurring in a substance under the influence of femtosecond laser radiation to solve research and engineering problems of creating and operating biomedical complexes.
