Biography
Sergei Kozlov is a leading professor, DSc in physics and mathematics, an honored worker of science in Russia, and a celebrated specialist in nonlinear optics and laser physics of ultrashort pulses.
He graduated with honors from the Department of Quantum Electronics at the Leningrad Institute of Fine Mechanics and Optics (now ITMO University) in 1982. Between 1982 and 1985, Sergei Kozlov worked as a PhD at the Department of Quantum Electronics. He received his PhD in physics and mathematics in 1986, DSc in physics and mathematics in 1997. He worked as an associate professor at the Department of Physics in 1992 and a professor at the Department of Photonics and Optoinformatics in 2004. Throught his years at ITMO, he held the position of an engineer (1986), an assistant (1987-1991), an associate professor (1991-1998), a professor at the Department of Physics (1998-2002), the dean of the Faculty of Photonics and Optoinformatics (since 2002), the head of the Department of Photonics and Optoinformatics (since 2002), and the head of the International Institute of Photonics and Optoinformatics (since 2013).
Sergei Kozlov is a laureate of the Lenin Komsomol Prize (1987). He was on the list of top 300 associate professors in Russia by ISSEP three times.
He was awarded a diploma of the Russian Ministry of Education (1994, 1997, and 1998) for his scientific guidance of top student research in natural sciences.
He is a holder of the A.A. Lebedev Award (2000) for his outstanding achievements in physical optics and role in organization of optics studies conducted by students.
He was granted the medal “In Memory of the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg” (2004).
In 2006, the scientific school Femtosecond Optics and Femtotechnologies co-founded by Sergei Kozlov won the competition for research and educational schools; it also won the contest for Russian scientific schools in 2010. Sergei Kozlov organized the opening of the new subject area for Bachelor’s students – photonics and optoinformatics.
Since 2004, he has been the chairman at the educational and methodological council for this field at the Education and Methodology Department for education in the field of photonics, optics and instrumentation of the Russian Ministry of Education and Science (now the Ministry of Science and Higher Education).
Sergei Kozlov is the head of Russia’s leading scientific school (НШ-5707.2010.2) “Study of the phenomenon of optics of waves from a small number of oscillations and the possibilities of creating new systems for generating and controlling radiation parameters from THz to UV spectrum ranges” (2010). He leads a top scientific and educational school in St. Petersburg “Optics of ultrashort and extremely short light pulses, nonlinear and coherent optics, optics of the terahertz frequency range” (2014).
Sergei Kozlov is a member of the D.S. Rozhdestvensky Optical Society and the International Society for Optics and Photonics.
He is the deputy editor-in-chief of the Journal of Optical Technology; a member of the editorial board of the journal Scientific and Technical Journal of Information Technologies, Mechanics and Optics; a member of the editorial board of Nanosystems: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics.
Sergei Kozlov is the deputy chairman of the program committee of the conference Fundamental Problems of Optics (2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016); the chairman of the International Conference Laser Optics for Young Scientists (2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016); and the co-chairman of the Summer Camp in Photonics 2016.
Sergei Kozlov is the chairman of the Academic Degree Council.
Over his career, he has authored more than 200 papers.
