Alexey Sergushichev

Biography

Alexey Sergushichev graduated with honors from the Computer Technology Department at ITMO University in 2013 and earned his PhD (thesis title: Computing Analysis Methods for Interpreting Transcriptomic and Metabolomic Data, supervisor: Maxim Artemov) in 2016. Since 2017, Alexey has headed a bioinformatics group at the International Laboratory “Computer Technologies.” In 2018, he managed the launch of an English-taught Master’s program in bioinformatics and system biology.

Alexey Sergushichev co-authored a large number of papers, including those featured in such high-ranked journals as Nature and Cell. He is also a laureate of the Skoltech Systems Biology Fellowship 2017.

Research

Alexey's research focuses on developing effective computational methods and solving complex algorithmic problems, as well as applying these methods and algorithms in the most relevant areas of biology.

As of now, he is supervising the following projects:

  • Development of the web app Phantasus for visualization and analysis of gene expression data;

  • Design of the FGSEA method  for quick analysis of representation of functional gene sets based on expression data;

  • Development of computational methods for the analysis of metabolic and other biological networks.
