The “Materials of Photonics” Master’s program is implemented by the Faculty of Laser Photonics and Optoelectronics and the Faculty of Photonics and Optical Information of ITMO University’s School of Photonics in the Russian and English languages depending on the specialization.
The program is aimed at training international-level specialists with competencies in a variety of topics from fundamentals of materials physics, theory and practice of the synthesis of photonic materials, physics and technology of semiconductor structures to applied aspects of the creation of modern optical devices and systems. The students will be provided with knowledge in the fields of modeling, design, synthesis and research of semiconductor nanostructures, particularly nanocrystals and quantum dots, structure and key features of activated dielectric materials (crystals, glass and glass-ceramics), as well as using these in the development of devices and systems for semiconductor electronics, waveguide photonics, and nonlinear, diffraction, interference, biomedical, sensory and display optics.
The development of optics, optical electronics and laser technologies is impossible without materials with unique physical properties. Such materials are used for the creation of photonic structures for lasers, LEDs, photodetectors, photovoltaic devices, high-performance recording devices, as well as devices for information processing, data storage, communications, computer technologies, and the development of energy-saving technologies, biomedicine, sensors, etc. Currently, the research of these modern materials is being conducted as part of global international projects, therefore, Master’s students training is carried out optionally in English and Russian with the participation of international and Russian partners of ITMO University.
Such materials are used to create photonic structures for lasers, LEDs, photodetectors, photovoltaic devices, high-performance recording devices, devices for processing information, data storage, communications, computer technology, as well as for the development of energy-saving technologies, biomedicine, sensors, etc. Currently, the research on and implementation of modern materials are an integral part of many global international projects, which is why the program is carried out optionally in English or Russian with the participation of ITMO University’s Russian and international partners.
